After the two world wars that bloodied our continent in the last century, the drums of war are once again beating in Europe. In fact, there has already been fighting on European soil for more than two and a half years. And for more than a year now we have had another military conflict in the Middle East. Not to mention the everlasting conflict in Central and sub-Saharan Africa. All these clashes, which until now have had a local character, may become part of a large-scale international conflagration in which the real stakes will be decided: world hegemony.

That is the point. As in the past two world wars, there is competition for world domination, which today is about control of the sources of wealth, oil and other scarce resources. The real competitors are clear about where they stand in the conflict. Low-ranking countries can hesitate and evaluate their alignment in the conflict. The current situation had its equivalent in the prologue phase of World War II. Countries such as the Soviet Union and Finland were in different coalitions at the end of the war than at the beginning.

Also today, alliances are being considered, more or less temporary, for countries that are not the main protagonists of the conflict. For example, the role of Russia, Ukraine, Korea... in the global conflict that is looming on the horizon may be different depending on the policy undertaken by the winner of the recent American elections. And unforeseen situations may also arise in the Middle East. No one would dare to think, twenty or thirty years ago, that Israel and the main Arab countries would be on the same side in a war taking place in the region. Precisely, the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023 was intended to frustrate the so-called "Abraham Pact" between the Arab world and the Jewish State.

But, aware of the irreparability of a nuclear war, the great powers with atomic arsenals prefer to abstain from intervening in conflicts with all the weapons they possess and their own troops. They entrust military operations to their junior partners. Thus, in the war in Ukraine the dead will not be from the great American power, they will be only Russians and Ukrainians, and, if NATO is to intervene later, the dead will in any case be Europeans. For the same reason Iran will not intervene with its nuclear weapons: the dead, in the fight against Israel, will be from Iran's junior partners: Palestinians, Lebanese, Houthis, Syrians... In turn, Iran is a junior partner of China, the only power currently capable of questioning American hegemony.

We must be aware that European nations are among the supporting countries, the junior partners of US imperialism. If the conflict in Ukraine escalates, we will find ourselves on the front line. We must make ourselves and our people aware of the danger of belonging to this military alliance. This game in which we are to be involved can only bring us misfortune. In fact, we were forced to participate in the commercial blockade of Russia, which harms us as much as the Russians themselves. In order to interrupt the supply of Russian gas to Europe, gas pipelines were even blown up.

Even if, as is most likely, a nuclear confrontation does not occur, a major conflagration with the characteristics of a world war may occur, and in that case the consequences for the participants could be disastrous, as shown by the local conflicts that are taking place. It is urgent to mobilize against the fate prescribed for us by the world's dominators. We must strive for peace. No country has the right to dominate the Earth. There are no chosen peoples; all peoples belong to God, and they have the right to live in peace and have equal access to the planet's resources.

Human relations, between groups, between nations, between races or ethnic groups, should not be based on criteria of domination and economic dependence. In order to confront human problems, the values implicit in the Beatitudes continue to be essential. Loving one's neighbor as oneself is the golden rule for facing human problems. The misfortunes of the world, the unjust systems of domination, are the fruit of human selfishness. This is where the battle must be fought, and the task is urgent. We have a lot at stake.
